Mumbai: In a bid to make Mumbai free of single-use plastic, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) seized around 2 lakh kg of prohibited plastic and recovered Rs 5.36 crore in fines from shops, restaurants and hawkers among others between June 2018 and January 2022.
In March 2018, the state government had banned the use of plastic items, including plastic bags, spoons, plates and more. It had given three months to manufacturers and retailers to get rid of the banned material before imposing the ban on June 23, reported the Indian Express.
During first and second wave of Covid-19 pandemic, the drive had lost ground.
